My Experience with a For-Profit college: 3 years served at The Art Institute of California - Sacramento
For three long years, I attended the Art Insitute Sacramento as an Animation major. I discovered a few things since my departure like you will have more debt than you can handle, will have a hard time finding a school that will accept the credits you've earned from the school, there are many bad events that this school doesn't want you to know, and it's not worth the time or money. When you sign up for the Art Institute they will ask you for an application fee of 100 dollars after you tour with a recruiter. You will never see that recruiter again once you attend the school and you will figure out why after attending the school for a while.
The Art Insitute sticks anyone who is interested in video game design into the animation department until they are ready to switch over. The kicker is you can only switch your major once. With the heavy tuition, you will hardly ever want to switch your major because you may have to pay out of pocket at some point. The Animation department was horrible, they had outdated equipment with one room with the equipment needed to do hand drawn animation. They did have several computer labs but normally those are filled due to classes being held at structured times. I met one of the best teachers there, who helped me develop as an animator. I've met a few other animation teachers and none of them were really worth the time of day.
After three years I switched my major to Graphic Design. I was a graphic design major for three semesters. I met the worst teacher possible, who was so rude. He has a horrible reputation with the students, 50% of the students don't pass his classes. The only reason he is tolerated is due to his reputation in the graphic design field. The teachers didn't care if you couldn't afford to buy all the supplies you'll need to do print production. I spent 100 dollars on just printing which is hard to do when you are financially unstable. As a graphic design major, you will have to take an introduction to web design course which many graphic designers hate. In that class, I learned that a lot of teachers won't help you if are a little more advanced than the other students in class. I excelled in the web design course but none of the web design teachers would help me if I asked a question regarding something that wasn't relevant to coursework even when I was finished with the assignment and homework that the teacher provided us.
I ended up being terminated from the school and was left with 50 thousand dollars in debt and no degree. This is an average number of students at this school, I've read reports about kids having one hundred thousand dollars in debt. Almost all of them could not use the credits they earned at the Art Institutes to get a better degree at a public university. I had a problem with this when I tried to talk to every single CSU (California State University), they all basically told me no in a polite manner. There have been numerous reports of the struggle of former Art Institute students. From a Call Curtis segment on the news to YouTube videos speaking out against the schools.
The EDMC who owns the Art Institute has been sued by the government and has settled out of court with several whistleblowers. There are several petitions online to get the company to forgive debts and other petitions to get the schools closed down. This is not just the Sacramento campus, it's all of them. There's so many scandals regarding this school and so many disgruntled students who attend the school, left the school or graduated the school. They also tend to lie about the profitability of your degree and the demand for the career field you want to join.
THERE IS NO REASON TO ATTEND THIS SCHOOL!
Please be cautious when approaching this school, do your homework and go public!
